Modeling Peak Flows at Culverts

How can we prioritize “at risk” culverts across an entire watershed? Ulster County is beginning to better evaluate culvert performance and the risks associated with washouts and flooding by comparing anticipated peak flows against known culvert capacity.

Read how GroundPoint, in collaboration with the County Department of the Environment, was able to adapt an approach originally developed with 30m digital elevation data to 1m high resolution LIDAR for an improvement of 900 times the original resolution! The subsequent drainage catchment characteristics were then used to generate peak flow estimates for each culvert and compare against existing capacity to help prioritize risk.
